Heleo4 light therapy is now available at the clinic

FGF medical now has a HELEO PRO LED device for procedures using the Heleo4 method. The device's LEDs illuminate the skin with light of specific wavelengths. Two types of procedures are performed on it: photobiomodulation and photodynamic therapy.

How light works

In photobiomodulation, light is absorbed by light-sensitive molecules in skin cells, including mitochondrial proteins, which provide the cell with energy. In response, the work of cells changes: their division, maturation and renewal.

Photodynamic therapy occurs in two stages. First, a photosensitizer, a substance that makes cells sensitive to light, is applied to the skin. It accumulates in cells with altered metabolism. Then the skin is illuminated, a reactive form of oxygen is formed in the tissues, and such cells are destroyed. According to the developer, this protocol uses blue light with a wavelength of 420 nm and red light with a wavelength of 630 nm.

In a systematic review of clinical trials of LED therapy, the strongest evidence was for acne. For skin rejuvenation, the evidence base is still weaker.

What programs are there at the clinic

  • For acne-prone skin: face and back
  • For age-related changes in facial skin
  • FORGET-ME-RED for rosacea and rosacea
  • Photobiomodulation session lasting 30 minutes

The doctor selects the program and number of procedures during consultation.

How the procedure works

The device panel is placed above the face, it does not touch the skin. The illumination time is set by the doctor. In one study, acne patients reported pain, redness, and swelling after photodynamic therapy, but only mild redness and tingling after light therapy without a photosensitizer.

For whom the procedure is contraindicated

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Epilepsy
  • Tumors
  • Photodermatitis, in which the skin reacts painfully to light
  • Hypersensitivity to components of products used during the procedure
  • Exacerbation of chronic inflammatory diseases
  • Active forms of tuberculosis
  • Circulatory failure stage II–III, hypertension stage III
