Causes of age spots
Removal of pigment spots begins with diagnosis: the choice of technique depends on the type and cause of pigmentation. Hyperpigmentation (excessive deposition of melanin pigment in the skin) can be post-inflammatory, that is, it occurs at the site of inflammation, for example after acne. It also develops under the influence of ultraviolet radiation or against the background of hormonal changes.
A dermatologist determines the type and cause of pigmentation and selects a course individually during an in-person consultation.
How to remove age spots
- Laser and phototherapy (hardware exposure to light on areas with excess pigment)
- Medical peels
- Preparations with depigmenting (lightening) components
A course may combine several methods. The number of procedures and the interval between them depend on the type of pigmentation.
Results
As the course progresses, pigmentation becomes less pronounced and skin tone evens out. The severity of the result depends on the type and cause of pigmentation.
Ultraviolet radiation provokes the appearance of more persistent pigmentation, so regular photoprotection (products with SPF) is necessary to maintain the effect. On the recommendation of a doctor, the course is repeated.
Recovery
After superficial peels, minor redness and moderate peeling may occur; the skin will recover within 3–5 days. After medium peels, recovery lasts 7–10 days; the doctor names the time frame after laser and light procedures in advance. During this entire period, sunscreen and avoidance of tanning are necessary.
There are contraindications. Specialist consultation is required.
